Applications are currently open for the position of treasurer - apply here by 31st May 2025.
The treasurer is responsible for the financial health of the LAGBPSC which means working closely with the main LAGB committee who have ultimate control of the bank accounts, although we are working towards financial independence, part of your role would be to facilitate this transition i.e. finding a bank that we could work with. The treasurer manages the budget and determines the funds available for things like the summer school, guest speakers in monthly series, and student conference funding. Organisers of student conferences may apply to the LAGBPSC for event funding. The treasurer allocates the funds for each application cycle and is responsible for collating the application data for review by the whole committee.
All committee members also take on more generic roles engaging with multiple aspects of the LAGBPSC this may include chairing talks in the Careers Events series, working on "reports" such as the "Future Areas for Postgraduate Research in Linguistics" paper produced last year, or something entirely new! We welcome creativity and a general willingness to chip in.
To succeed in this role you should have excellent communication skills as you will be responsible for maintaining a line of communication between the main LAGB and the rest of the PSC regarding finances. You will also need to have strong organisational skills as many of the treasurer's duties are time sensitive you must be able to plan in advance to open applications with sufficient time for advertising and completion by applicants. Although we do not expect previous treasury experience you should be financially literate, able to balance a budget and anticipate future expenses allotting appropriate funds. Finally, you should come armed with the flexibility to contribute to other aspects of the LAGBPSC.
From being on the committee of the LAGBPSC you will hone your organisational and management skills. You will also become familiar with the current status and development needs of Linguistics within the UK while getting to know a range of linguists from all over the UK developing a broad professional network. As the treasurer, you will hone skills in financial planning and management for a large organisation. You will also have fun!
